I'd love to, but ... (the words I hear too often)
If we all agree that the school system is #$%&! , why are there still so many people in it?
Why are there still teachers teaching “as-told” and completing ridiculous reports, even though they see the pointlessness of it all and the effect on their emotions and health?
Why are so many parents crippling their finances to pay for private schools that may have given an advantage in the 1800’s (maybe), when better resources are available to anyone who bothers to look?
Why are so many people outsourcing parenting to people who have their hands tied behind their back?
Why are so many still playing that outdated game?
I don’t get it. Is this REALLY what parents want for their kids, and how teachers want to work?
Yes, homeschooling is on the rise. Yes, teachers are leaving the profession in droves. Sure, there’s “education reform” (although mostly it’s just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic).
So many well-used phrases.
And yet,
the majority of folk are still choosing the safety of the known and societal norm over the vulnerability of doing something different.
Parents know their children best and if they take the time (and get their own projections and egos out of the way), they know exactly what their children need.
So why not just give them that?
Why waste all that time, effort, money, energy and resources taking the roundabout way?
Imagine if:
Instead of forking out all those thousands $$$ for schools that have no idea who your children are, and tutors trying to plug up holes that don’t exist, you invested that money in (just some examples):
- Property for your kids and a property course? By the time they’re 18 they’d have funds to pursue whatever passion they want.
- A real mentor aligned with the truth of what your kids want to explore and contribute in the world? Someone who can show them the exact steps, because they’ve walked the path that the young person wants to go on?
- Specific teachers for a specific purpose for a specific time? (rather than making do with what is provided in school?)
And what if, as a teacher, you tuned into your own heart and discovered what it is that you love about what you do and found a way of contributing and being well rewarded without the confines of a system that isn’t serving you?
There are so many options that most people don’t see.
Why not?
Because they’re too busy living a life they don’t want to live.
I don’t dispute that there are some people doing great things. I’ve spent time with many of them, and I love those conversations.
And still, I’m acutely aware that I have to search them out. That, while it’s easy to engage someone in conversation about what’s wrong in the world and education, it’s much more rare to hear someone talk about what they’re actively doing or trialling to create a great life for themselves and their family.
What I hear more of the time is: “I’d love to, but … (insert your own excuse here)
If you’re doing the vulnerable thing, I want to hear from you. I’m gathering stories to share with those who think they can’t.
And if you are one of those people who would love a different life, a different model, a different way of being, and aren’t doing anything towards it, this is your call-out!
I want you to answer one question for yourself:
“What’s the worst that could happen if I do things differently?”
Really go into it, let yourself feel the fear of the worst that could be and acknowledge the truth: yes, it could.
But what’s worse is NOT doing it and living more of the life that most people regret when, you know, it comes to “that” time.
Notice what happens.
Now that you’ve explored the worst, you’re free to roam, dream, envision how things could be if everything turned out for the best.
Because that’s the other side of it. When you accept the possibility of the worst, you also open to the BEST outcome being possible.
Now you have CHOICE. True choice.
Do you choose the life you’re living now?
Is this what you really want for yourself and the children in your care?
Or will you dare and go for something different?
